Why is PrestaShop introducing an annual fee for modules and themes?

The annual fee is being introduced to support the implementation of enhanced quality checks and services on the PrestaShop Marketplace. Enhancements include:

First product technical review under 7 days

Your first technical validation will be proceed within seven days after submission.

Improved security vulnerabilities check

We will boost checks on modules and themes to prevent security vulnerabilities and maintain the highest security standards for all products available on the PrestaShop Marketplace (modules, themes, and services).

Code and Functionality Testing

Extended testing of your module or theme’s code and functionalities.

Introduction of PHP compatibility checks

To optimize the performance of your module, we check if the version of PHP you are using is compatible with the latest versions of PrestaShop.

Overrides Compatibility checks

We are introducing a new review step to assess the overrides used in your module and theme and their compatibility with the top-selling modules to prevent conflicts with your module or theme.

The annual fee is being introduced to support the implementation of enhanced quality checks and services on the PrestaShop Marketplace. Enhancements include:

2.What will be the billing process for this annual fee?

Starting May 2024, the annual fee of €99 per module or theme will be required annually. If you already have modules and themes and you would like to continue to sell your Product on PrestaShop Marketplace, here are the payment process steps:

  • Starting May 2024, you can decide to pay the annual fee for modules and themes you want to keep selling on the marketplace.
  • On the 30th of June 2024, modules and themes you don’t want to sell on our Marketplace (Products without any payment) will be taken offline.
  • Ultimately in September 2024, offline modules and themes will gradually be removed from the catalog and you will no longer be able to put your module or theme back online.

3.How can I pay the annual fee or deactivate my module?

For new modules and themes, the annual fee payment will be asked just before you submit your Product zip for validation. For existing modules and themes, you will need to go to your product page and follow the payment instructions to pay the annual fee. Each Product has its own annual fee, you will have to repeat the steps as many times as you have modules and themes you’d like to sell on the marketplace. For those you don’t want to sell anymore, you can delete them from the Product page in the “Manage Product Visibility” section.

4.How do I ensure my fee is paid annually?

Once you paid for your Product, it is automatically paid for a period of 12 months and is automatically renewed for the same period in the absence of cancellation.

5.Can I opt out of the annual fee and still sell on the PrestaShop Marketplace?

No, the annual fee is a mandatory requirement for selling modules or themes on the PrestaShop Marketplace. It contributes to maintaining the high standards of quality and service on our platform.

6.What happens if I decide to cancel my payment during the year?

Your Product will be deactivated : the Product will not be sold anymore on our marketplace. At the end of the year, starting the day after your submission, your Product will be definitely removed. The annual fee is a mandatory requirement for selling modules or themes on the PrestaShop Marketplace. No refund is possible before the end of the yearly payment period.

7.Can I submit multiple modules or themes under a single annual fee?

No, the annual fee of €99 applies per module or theme submission. Each module or theme will have its own separate annual fee. However, the annual fee covers multiple submissions (new module version, minor and major updates, …) for the same module or theme during the year.

8.What are the Products concerned by this fee?

Modules, themes and email templates.

9.Will I still have access to my Partner Account if I don’t pay for the Product annual fee?

Yes, access to your partner account will remain available. However, you will not be able to put any of your Products back on sale until you pay your Product annual fee.

10.What if my module or theme does not pass the validation?

If your module or theme is declined by our team, you will receive a detailed feedback report. You can make the necessary adjustments for resubmission. The annual fee covers as many validation attempts as needed within the same year, the only limit is 3 submissions per day.

11.Does the price vary according to the type of submission like minor/major update or security update ?

The price is fixed and billed annually per Product. Once you’ve paid, you are free to submit as many versions as you want during the year. The only limit is 3 submissions per day.

12.What are my obligations to merchants if I don’t want to pay for modules and themes already sold on the marketplace?

You have to provide support to your clients until your Product is deleted from the catalog by PrestaShop (September 2024).

13.Why is this an annual recurring fee instead of a one time payment ?

At PrestaShop we consider that modules should be updated at least once a year. These regular updates ensure compliance, reliability, and compatibility with the latest PrestaShop version. The annual fee enables you to submit your module for validation each time you make a major or minor Product update, ensuring a seamless experience for both you and your users.

14.Will there be any changes to the revenue share model for sales on the PrestaShop Marketplace?

No, the revenue share model remains unchanged. The revenue sharing model funds hosting, marketplace platform maintenance and support. The annual fee is a separate charge to cover the costs of a dedicated team and specialized tools to reduce your validation time and improve the quality checks for the modules and themes you submit.

15.Can I get my money back from sales of a module if I decide not to proceed to the annual fee payment ?

If you choose not to pay the annual fees for your Products and quit our Marketplace, you can withdraw your money in the period of 3 months after deactivation of your Product.
